As a parent you are responsible for your children. As a son or a daughter you are responsible for your parents. As an employee you are responsible for the company you work for. As leader you are responsible for your organization. As a citizen you are responsible for your country. And you are responsible for yourself.

People often shirk responsibility. Shirking responsibility is the fastest route to mediocrity. I was taught early in my career that the first sign I am doing well would be when my Boss would give me additional work.  He would not give work to those he did not trust would he? Every additional job is an acknowledgement of my capabilities. I look at it that way and I have not been disappointed.

Many employers ask candidates about the responsibilities they had at their previous job. The answers give them a clear assessment of the capabilities of the person they are interviewing now. Someone who can give a list of responsibilities that went beyond his job profile is obviously an achiever.

Accountability and dependability are core values that define the character of a person. You should take your responsibilities seriously and not shy away from them. Enjoy them! Think of different innovative ways to fulfill them. Transform them to learning experiences. When you begin to enjoy doing something you tend to do it well. So accept your responsibilities and do it well.Remember taking on additional responsibilities cheerfully is the fast way up the ladder.
