Put the haters on mute

By definition, a hater is someone who dislikes a specific person or thing; a very critical person.  Haters come in various forms – friends, frienemies, real enemies, and your own inner self-doubt.  Comments like, “You will never be good enough,” “You can’t do that,” and “You are nothing” characterize haters.

They sow doubt, fear, and death of dreams.  If you want to achieve great things, you must learn to put the haters on mute.  In other words, don’t listen to voices which constantly tear you down.

President Obama is an excellent model of putting haters on mute.  He remains calm whether a hater is calling him “Osama” or wagging a finger in his face.  He does not pay attention to them or join their fight.  They called him names during his first presidential campaign, first term in office, second presidential campaign, second term in office, and they are still calling him names.  And he keeps living a good life.  Learn to do likewise:

  1. Think well of yourself.  You’re not perfect; you’re human.  Don’t allow anyone to make you feel like you don’t belong here, there, or anywhere you wish to be.
  2. Pay attention to your dreams not your haters.  The best they can give you is distraction.  Anything that is not moving you towards your dreams is a distraction.  Leave distractions alone.
  3. Practice self-control.  Choose your thoughts and actions carefully.  You have no control over another person’s words or actions, but you have control over how you react to them.  React in strength.
  4. Walk away. As the old saying goes, “don’t argue with a fool, people might not notice the difference.”
  5. Reinforce who you are by doing things that build your self-esteem.  In hip hop lingo, “Do you!”  And the noise will filter out.
