Leadership Styles

Leadership style is a leader’s method of providing direction, implementing plans, and influencing people. There are many leadership styles; some overlap while others stand out. Below are some of the more recognized styles:

Autocratic – this type of leader provides long-term direction and focuses on the end game. Typically, an autocrat has more experience and knowledge than his followers. He gives clear direction and sets standards. Autocrats are controlling and rarely consider other’s suggestions. Unfortunately, we’re all too familiar with the autocrat in African politics. They rule with iron fists, control all segments of society, and create bottlenecks in decision-making.

Democratic – this type of leader is participative. She involves others in decision-making and takes into consideration, their input. She is comfortable allowing others to take the lead in different areas of community building. Though this style brings higher levels of team satisfaction, it slows down the decision-making process.

Bureaucratic – this is a traditional style of leadership. It emphasizes established institutions, rules, and regulations. There is often a rigid hierarchy and decision-making is time consuming. A bureaucratic leader may motivate by discipline and compliance e.g. promoting only those who follow the rules. This style does not work well when leading highly skilled or intellectual people.

Transformational – Also called innovative or visionary, this type of leader inspires followers by his actions and vision. A transformational leader has a charismatic personality that draws followers and inspires them to act. Their followers want to be like them. However, followers may be so dependent on the leader’s presence that if they lose the leader, they lose their way.

Transactional – emphasizes the interchange between the leader and the followers. It typically employs a carrot and stick approach. Followers get rewarded for “good behavior” and get punished, for “bad.” It is effective for achieving short-term goals but causes resentment, long-term. Followers are subject to the whims of the leader.
